Einstein Designs was originally conceived by Forest Crawford and Paul Metz in 1987. With some work, they produced an improved version of the 19″ plasma ball created by Bill Parker, a MIT student. Later n 1988, Forest and Paul were introduced to Dave Sandel and his company Roanoke Electronics. Dave redesigned the power supply, frequency and phase controller for the Einstein Designs plasma ball.
Later that year, the idea for the Light Tree was developed by the three of them. The light tree included a Bonsai like tree mounted on a real lava base. The tree branches were built by using about 50 yards of fine wire tightly wrapped around a flexible metal tree-like harness. The wires were then connected by hand to tiny grain of wheat bulbs along the branches for the lighting effect. The Light Tree also included an audio controller that would respond to music and produce an amazing lighting effect. This was marketed and distributed by the Sharper Image Catalog in 1987.
Then in 2019, Forest Crawford and Dave Sandel were introduced to Tom Carr who had extensive experience in neon lighting design, fabrication and production. Shortly thereafter, the new Einstein Designs was born !
